Mikuni Paper Lantern-Making Workshop (Itoya Mikuni Lanterns)
みくにちょうちんづくりたいけん(みくにちょうちん いとや)
Sakai City’s Traditional Mikuni Lanterns, as Your Own One-of-a-Kind Item
Itoya was founded in 1791 in Mikuni, Sakai City. They are one of only a few paper lantern makers nationwide that handle the entire production process in-house.
Here, visitors can experience truly authentic paper-lantern-making, by taking painted washi paper and stretching it over the lantern frame — and in fact, this makes a great opportunity to encounter other traditional Fukui crafts, like Echizen washi paper, that go into making these beautiful Japanese-style lanterns.
